Apple Store, 103 Prince Street

To celebrate the spirit of independent film, Apple and indieWire are hosting dozens of free filmmaking events from April 22 to May 3, including a Meet the Filmmaker series. Each night of the festival a different filmmaker (or group of filmmakers) will give a talk, possibly lead a discussion, at the Apple Store’s cozy theatre located at 103 Prince Street. Below are a few features that particularly interested Recession Girl but check out the website for a full listing and other information about free events. Word on the street is that you should show up early.

Both films screen at Tribeca. Wednesday, April 22, 7:00 p.m.

Natalie Portman Natalie Portman joins CEO Christine Aylward on the stage of the Apple Store, SoHo, to discuss their new web project — MakingOf — a site that promises to transform the way people view, enjoy, and participate in entertainment. Friday, April 24, 3:30 p.m.

Gael Garcia Bernal, Diego Luna, and Carlos Cuarón Reuniting with his collaborators in Y Tu Mamá También, Cuarón wrote and directed Rudo y Cursi. The director’s first full-length film stars Bernal and Luna as brothers whose desire to excel as professional soccer players often finds them battling one another on and off the field. Monday, April 27, 5:00 p.m.

Eric Bana The actor (Black Hawk Down, Munich, The Other Boleyn Girl) makes his directorial debut in Love the Beast. Cheap Yoga

Recession Girl just stumbled upon a new yoga studio, The Fierce Club, which claims that it "ain't your momma's yoga studio, unless your mom is fierce."

Instead of teaching classes to traditional "yoga sounds," these instructors teach to the "killer music" we'd hear on our ipods. It claims to be a more contemporary studio that doesn't tell you what to eat or drink (except to suggest Cafe Habana down the street), but promises a great workout in one hour.

They encourage you to stop by and "participate in your life... caught on fire."

$5 classes until March 8, 2009, plus they have a coupon one their website for one free class. http://thefierceclub.com/. (Note the badass high heels the instructors are wearing in all of their photos).

Hope to see my fellow recessionistas there this weekend!

Recessionista Swindle of the Day

Warm weather is on its way, and you'll soon be trading your steaming Starbucks latte for a refreshing icy one. But at $4.87 for a grande, you may have to move to Flushing to keep this habit up. You've been funding the Starbucks bigwigs vacations for years, it's time to get a little back. This summer, order an iced grande doppio for $2.16. That's a double shot of espresso over ice with enough room to fill up the rest of the cup with the *free* milk at the counter. It's free! That's what it's there for! You get the exact same drink - for less than half the price. (Sometimes the baristas even add the milk for you ... they're on to us).
